How to Unload the Pistol

Before we begin manipulating the pistol we will unload it. If it is already unloaded we will double check that it is unloaded, just to be sure.

If the terms used are unfamiliar to you  please refer to this post.

This is a short video explaining what is written below.

Step one: Keep your finger away from the trigger while pointing the muzzle in a safe direction. A safe direction is such that if the pistol fires no person will be struck by the bullet. In my house that is a brick wall about twenty feet away.

Two: Remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release with your strong hand thumb. If you are left handed then press it with your trigger finger.

Three: Lock back the slide by pulling the slide to the rear while simultaneously pressing up on the slide stop with your strong hand thumb. The chambered round will fall out of the ejection port as you lock the slide back. hint: if you pull all the way to the rear the slide will not lock back. By pushing up on the slide stop until the slide stop slips into a visible notch on the slide.

Four: Now look through the ejection port and into the chamber of the barrel towards the muzzle. You are looking for the base of a round. If you see a dark hole in the chamber, that is good. Now look through the ejection port down into the inside of the grip. You should be able to look all the way through the gun. If you see the top of a round, you forgot to remove the magazine.Return to step two.

Five: Put your finger into the ejection port and insert it into the chamber of the gun. If you feel a flat surface that may be a round in the chamber. If your finger goes inside the chamber then that is good because the chamber is empty.

Six: Place your finger through the ejection port and into the inside of the grip. This ensures the magazine is not in the pistol.
Once you have looked and felt in both the chamber and the inside of the grip you have assured yourself that the pistol is unloaded.

Remember safety rule number 1? We will still treat the pistol as loaded and not point it anyone or anything of value. Don’t shoot your TV, dog, cat or family by pointing the pistol in an unsafe direction.

To return the slide to the forward position just pull back on the slide and release it. It will go forward. You can also push down on the slide stop to release the slide forward.
